(Thornton, Michael. "11 Reasons Why the Unemployment Crisis is Even Worse Than You Think.")
Past Present
With automation of farming, dramatic increases in agricultural prices, and huge increases in food commodities, "farmers took on huge amounts of debt to acquire more land and farming equipment as local banks were willing to feed their illusions with loans" (Quinn, Jim. "Grapes of Wrath").
The struggle to acquire a job was extremely hard at one point that even those in college had to be prepared to enter unemployment almost immediately after graduation.

Today, students are facing high university tuitions and loan debts greater than ever before. "While having a high school degree used to be enough to make it into the middle class,...the bar is higher today. '[Millenials are] the first generation that needs to have a college degree and experience to compete, before they even enter the workforce'" (Goodman, Leah. "Millennial College Graduates: Young, Educated, Jobless"). "Schooling and technical skills alone aren’t enough; young people also need 'soft skills' like communication, problem-solving and cross-cultural competencies to be successful" (Nassetta, Christopher. "There's a global youth unemployment crisis. Here's what we can do about it").
A solution to the unemployment crisis among young adults is "investing more government dollars in the public-private apprenticeship programs that have been so successful in getting young people ready for work" (Nassetta, Christopher. "There's a global youth unemployment crisis. Here's what we can do about it").
